What to Expect

How to Prepare for Dumpster Rental

The day for your big construction project has arrived. You are ready and excited to kick off the job you’ve been planning for a long time. One of the most important features of the project is the garbage container rental.

You need to be prepared for the dumpster rental arrival if you are going to get the most out of your dumpster. This section introduces how a dumpster can be used in construction projects and what you should do to get the most out of it.

With the arrival of your dumpster rental, you can have a clear schedule for your project.

The construction project will involve a lot of debris and trash – this is why it’s important to have a dumpster rental on hand. You can rent one for as long as you need it to be there so that you are not being blocked by the city during the process.

Some projects might need more than one dumpster, so be sure to ask your contractor about what they recommend before making any decisions.

In order to prepare for the process, here are some tips that you should consider:

Step 1: Create Space For Your Roll-Off Dumpster

The area in which the dumpster is to be placed should be free of any objects that may get in the way or cause damage when the dumpster is delivered. Such objects include, but are not limited to, cars, lawn ornaments, construction materials, etc.

Take note of the size of your delivery. Keep in mind these dimensions:

  • 10-yard dumpster rental: About 14 feet long and 7.6 feet wide
  • 15-yard dumpster rental: About 16 feet long and less than 7.6 feet wide
  • 20 yard dumpsters, 30 yard dumpsters, and 40 yard dumpsters: All about 22 feet long and 7.6 feet wide, but different heights
  • The size of your delivery area should be 10 feet wide at minimum.

Step 2: Accounting for Delivery Trucks

Although most of our dumpsters are about 8 feet tall you will also need to account for the height of the roll-off style delivery truck. These need a vertical clearance of 14 to 18 feet depending on the size of the dumpster. Your delivery area should be free of tree limbs, power lines and anything else that could cause interferrence.

In addition to the height of the delivery truck, the delivery truck driver requires 50 feet of clearance in a straight line for parking purposes.

Step 3: Keep in Mind the Dumpster Delivery Date

With you choose exactly when you want the delivery date to be so you will know when to expect it. Be specific about exactly when you would like the container delivered. If your project requires the roll-off container to be dropped off early in the morning or at a specific time just indicate this to us when you place your order.

If you have very strict requirements or need to reschedule, please call or contact us in enough time so that we can make the proper adjustments for you.

Step 4: Filling Your Dumpster

Be conscious of what type of debris your dumpster rental is intended for. Depending on its purpose and size, there are certain limitations as to what you can fill your container with. Familiarize yourself with what can and cannot be put into your dumpster here.

What materials am I allowed to put in the dumpster?

Unfortunately, you can’t put just anything in your bin.

There are restrictions as far as weight and hazardous material, and you have to make sure you get the right container for the right job. If you’re getting rid of furniture, doors or large quantities of trash, you should order at least a 25-yard dumpster. You could use a 10-yard dumpster, but the walls of the bin are only 2 feet high, so you run the risk of piling the trash too high, and we cannot safely pick up any bin that is overloaded.

What debris are considered hazardous? How can I dispose of them properly? The following materials are hazardous: asbestos, treated wood (telephone poles and railroad ties), oil, paint, chemicals, propane tanks, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, etc. If you have paint cans where the paint is totally dry, then it is not hazardous. Tires are not hazardous, but they pose a problem at the landfill, so we may charge an extra fee per tire. See below for a complete list of the hazardous materials.

How much room do I need for the dumpster?

A 40 yrd dumpster (our largest bin) you need approximately 60 ft in length.

This is approx. 4 car lengths. The bin is 22 ft long, and our trucks are between 33-37 ft long. The truck is also 10 ft wide, so you need 12 ft in width to give the driver 1 ft on either side to maneuver.

Make sure the area for your dumpster is clear of any infringing objects, such as cars, trees or hanging wires, that could prevent the dumpster from being properly placed in the location where you want it. Be aware of the size of your delivery.

Keep in mind these dimensions:

  • 10-yard dumpster: Approx. 14 feet long and 7.6 feet wide
  • 15-yard dumpster: Approx 16 feet long and less than 7.6 feet wide
  • 20, 30, and 40-yard dumpsters: All about 22 feet long and 7.6 feet wide, but different heights
  • The size of your delivery area should be a minimum of 10 feet wide

How high can we fill the bins?

Please, never fill a bin higher than the side-walls. Please try to make sure trash and debris is level with the top

How many tons of debris can I put in my dumpster?

That depends. About 5 tons in a 40-yard container, 3 tons in a 20-yard container, 1.5 tons in a 10-yard container.

For our 10-yard container, the amount of tonnage depends on the material – if you fill up with inert material you can load up to 11 tons, non-inert 2 tons.
